We are grateful for Carl’s many contributions to the field of Computational Neuroscience and to the Bernstein Center Freiburg in particular.

Carl has been for many years a highly acclaimed faculty member and inspiring teacher in the annual summer school “Advanced Course in Computational Neuroscience”, three of those courses taking place at the Bernstein Center Freiburg in 2008, 2009, and 2010.

In addition, Carl spent several longer term visits at the BCF, during which he also contributed his significant insights to the teaching and training of our PhD students, Postdocs and PIs (see e.g. his 2009 Advanced Course on Balanced Networks, with the links to the 3 lectures in this Course provided below).

Last but not least, we thank Carl for his insightful comments and creative contributions to the BCF as a highly-valued member of our Scientific Advisory Board.

We mourn Carl van Vreeswijk: we lose a brilliant scientist, a dedicated and inspiring teacher, and a true friend. We will miss his expert advice and his inspiring energy.
