Abstract

The spatial distribution of neuronal somata and their neurites has a significant impact on the connectivity of neuronal networks. It is well known how activity properties such as firing rates, event strength or synchronisation are modulated by network structure, and in turn it has been proposed how these activity properties shape the structural configuration of the network. However, once the network connectivity is established and mature, it remains largely unknown how neuronal local embedding affects its particular activity processing.

We investigated the relationship between local embedding and activity processing at the single neuron level. We divided the research into two parts. Since we use calcium imaging to observe activity, and the contribution of different activity features to the calcium signal is not fully understood, we first investigated which aspects of neuronal activity are associated with the signals observed by calcium imaging. We then investigated how the local embedding of neurons within the same network influences the processing of activity at the level of individual neurons.
