Abstract

Ongoing work in the group on the use of the direct configuration model (DCM) to model facets of structural plasticity has been surprisingly successful, in particular, the ability of the DCM to produce Hebbian like learning and thereby functional networks while retaining homeostasis. Currently, this work has been limited to modelling the breaking and reconnection of synapses, and thus has been unable to model functional plasticity; the change in strength of individual synapses. I introduce our work on using the DCM to model the plasticity of synaptic nano-modules -- pairs of aligned pre- and post-synaptic protein modules mediating the chemical signal to the target cell -- in an attempt to envelope functional and structural plasticity in a single model.
