Abstract

The first elements in the visual signal processing chain are the photoreceptors, which convert retinal illumination into neuronal excitation. From starry night to sunny day, natural light intensity spans 13 orders of magnitude, and photoreceptors can respond to contrasts across this range without recurrent gain control. We have investigated the mechanism behind this and formulated a model that reproduces this phenomenon while being both biologically plausible and numerically efficient. This model is therefore a suitable candidate for numerical modeling of retinal responses
