Abstract:
An important question in brain machine interfacing is how the human brain codes motor actions. In my lab, we combine information based machine learning approaches with intracranial recordings from the surface of the human brain (ECoG) to investigate this question. Compared to non-invasive techniques ECoG allows for sampling of neural signals with greatly extended temporal dynamics plus high spatial resolution over extended areas of the brain. In my presentation I will focus on the neural coding of target directed movements of the upper limb, the fingers, and consider how ipsi- and contralateral neural activity accompanying these motor acts relate to each other. Finally, I will present an analysis of how learning of skilled movements changes the ongoing brain dynamics. I will discuss the results with respect to approaches to brain machine interfacing.
The talk is open to the public. Guests are cordially invited!
