Abstract: Gaba-ergic synapses have been taken traditionally as hyperpolarising in studies of synchrony in cortical circuits. At the same time, GABA-ergic neurotransmission, as it appears early during development is depolarising, and even in the adult it can be partially depolarising or shunting. We address the changes in the GABA reversal potential and such effects on the synchronisation of reciprocally coupled neural oscillators. We develop a theory showing that stability of synchrony vs asynchrony and partial synchrony (phase-delay locking) depends on the reversal and also on the intrinsic spike-generating dynamics of the neurons. We confirm our theory with simulations and find exixtence of clustered states in large scale networks.
