Abstract: Science-technology-medicine (STM) publishing is a billion-dollar industry. Most publishers make use of a subscription-based model in which researchers, their funders and the public cede control of the scientific literature to journals in return for editorial oversight and publication. Is this model reasonable? More and more scientists, institutions, funding agencies and publishers think it is not. Here, I will explore the current landscape of scientific publishing - the existing editorial models and the services that 'top tier' journals provide to the scientific community. PLoS Biology aims to challenge these journals, to be an effective advocate of the open-access publishing model supported by the Public Library of Science. By publishing in open-access journals, individual scientists can lead the way to making the scientific literature a vastly improved resource for the people who pay for and do the research.
