Abstract:
Recent work has identified the medial reticular formation (mRF) as a potential substrate for a brainstem action selection system. It has been proposed that this system evolved in simple vertebrates to handle the co-ordination of basic tasks. One of the major aspects of the work on the mRF was the proposal and study of a new anatomical model of its structure. In this work, it was found that the mRF most likely had small-world network characteristics. The project I'm currently working on consists in the numerical simulation of this large-scale structural model as a dynamic system, determining whether the dynamics systematically change with the increasing "small-worldness" of the network, and how this relates to action selection.
The talk is open to the public. Guests are cordially invited!
