Abstract: Traditionally, the changes in global state of the brain (consciousness, anaesthesia, and generalised seizures) are thought to originate in experimentally-observed alterations at the molecular and neuronal scale. Mean-field models of these states provide a method of semi-quantitatively linking molecular-scale effects with observed EEG, and behaviour. Specifically I will discuss how GABAergic anaesthetic drug effects could explain general anaesthesia, and also how these same effects can predispose this "inhibited" cortex to seizures. This approach may be useful in explaining some of the pro-convulsant effects of anti-epileptic drugs.
The talk is open to the public. Guests are cordially invited!
